Blackbuckle

Blackbuckle is a village in the riverlands, a small settlement of hovels that became a bargaining chip in the centuries-old feud between House Bracken and House Blackwood. After the War of the Five Kings, when Lord Jonos Bracken pressed his claim for the return of lands he said the Blackwoods had stolen, Blackbuckle was one of the villages he listed on a parchment map presented to Jaime Lannister. Bracken's list included "the villages of Buckle, Blackbuckle, Cairns, and Claypool" among the territories he demanded as recompense for his service to the Iron Throne.

Role in the Bracken-Blackwood Settlement

When Jaime Lannister negotiated the surrender of Raventree Hall, Lord Tytos Blackwood was required to cede some of his lands to Bracken. Blackwood initially offered only "Woodhedge, Crossbow Ridge, and Buckle"—a ruin, a ridge, and a few hovels. Jaime pressed for more, and Blackwood eventually agreed to add Lord's Mill and the village of Honeytree. Blackbuckle was not among the villages Blackwood offered; it remained in Blackwood hands under the terms of the surrender, a small but symbolic retention in a peace that otherwise favored the Brackens.

Significance

Blackbuckle's appearance in the negotiations underscores the petty scale of the Bracken-Blackwood conflict, where villages of a few dozen souls were fought over for generations. The village itself is never described in detail, but its inclusion in Bracken's list marks it as one of the many small settlements caught between two feuding houses whose enmity, as Hoster Blackwood observed, had lasted for thousands of years.
